How To Rehydrate After Hot Yoga: Four Tips

Do you frequently have amazing yoga sessions but struggle to healthily hydrate yourself afterward? Keep reading to discover four tips about how to rehydrate after hot yoga.

As a popular hot yoga center in Dayton, Ignite Yoga helps keep your mind and body healthy. Drinking water after class is an important part of staying hydrated. Follow these four tips to make it easier.

1. Restore Your pH Levels

When you sweat, you lose electrolytes, particularly sodium and potassium. This raises your blood’s pH levels, putting you at risk of dehydration and, in rare cases, hypokalemia.

One popular method of improving your electrolytes is mixing one ounce of apple cider vinegar, two tablespoons of honey, and a pinch of sea salt into a twelve-ounce glass. If you’d rather just buy a pre-made solution, sports drinks offer a convenient and effective way to increase your electrolytes.

Other sources of electrolytes include:

  • Coconut water
  • Electrolyte tablets
  • Emergen-C
  • Other branded electrolyte supplements like Endura

Electrolytes are essential for fluid balance, blood pressure regulation, muscle contractions (including your heart), healthy nerve signals, waste removal, and cellular nutritional absorption.

2. Detoxify

When you exercise, your body builds up toxins in the skin and digestive system but needs help expelling them. One of the best ways to rehydrate after hot yoga involves detoxifying your body. We’re a fan of the following recipe, which you should mix together in a 12-ounce glass:

  • The juice of half a lemon
  • Two tablespoons of maple syrup
  • A pinch of sea salt

Lemon juice is a yoga tradition for detoxification.

3. Use Juice

To help stay hydrated after your workout, harness the natural nutrition of various juices. While you have plenty of options, we recommend the following two options:

  • Cucumber juice: Cucumber juice is high in vitamin C and helps heal the inflammation you’re feeling after your session.
  • Orange juice: Most people are familiar with the health benefits of orange juice, especially its high vitamin C content. To replenish extra electrolytes, mix in a teaspoon of sea salt.

If you can’t drink or don’t like juice, consider golden milk as an alternative. This is milk mixed with a tablespoon of turmeric and other spices to help heal and rehydrate your body. Try different options, mixtures, and ratios to see what works best for your body.

4. Keep Hydrating

Don’t make hydrating a one-time thing after your session. You should spread your drinking out over the rest of your day. You should aim to consume about 1.5 liters of water, but drinking it all at once can make you nauseous, so be sure to pace yourself.

Drink whenever you feel thirsty, but stop when you feel full or have satiated your thirst. Vary your drinks between water, sources of electrolytes, and juice, but also ensure you get plenty of rest and eat a balanced diet.
