How to: Build a consistent practice

How many times have you heard the phrase, “Consistency is key”? It can become frustrating, especially in difficult times, when you are struggling to follow through with commitments; but regularly engaging in something on a consistent basis is the only way to achieve results. Building a consistent yoga practice can transform your life, bringing not only physical benefits but also mental clarity + emotional balance. If you’re up for the challenge, we have 10 tips to help you cultivate a regular yoga routine that fits seamlessly into your lifestyle. If you’re local to Centerville, Ohio, you will also want to join in Ignite’s Spark Change Challenge, where you will be awarded for 21 days of in-person yoga. Read on to prepare for the challenge!

1. Start with Clear Intentions

First, identify why you want to practice yoga. Is it for stress relief, flexibility, strength, or simply a moment of peace in your day? Write down your intentions and keep them visible (i.e. create a vision board). This will serve as your motivational anchor on days when your willpower wanes.

2. Create a Dedicated Space

Designate a specific area in your home for your practice. This doesn’t need to be large; a cozy corner with a mat and some calming decor can do wonders. Having a dedicated space can help signal to your mind that it’s time to unwind and focus on your practice. Check out our blog about creating your own home studio here.

3. Establish a Routine

Decide on a regular time that works best for you—whether it’s early in the morning, during your lunch break, or in the evening. Aim for at least 15-30 minutes daily, gradually increasing as you feel more comfortable. Allow for grace in your routine, as well. Keeping too strict rules can lead to inconsistency, so allow yourself to have days where your practice looks different. There will be days when you are only able to give 20%, but that 20% is all you need to give. It’s your “100%” for that day.

4. Start Small and Build Gradually

If you’re new to yoga, start with shorter sessions and simpler poses. Even a 10-minute practice can be incredibly beneficial. As you grow more confident, gradually incorporate longer sessions and more challenging postures. This helps prevent overwhelm and keeps you engaged.

5. Incorporate Variety

To maintain interest and motivation, mix up your routines. Explore different styles—Hatha, Vinyasa, Yin, or restorative yoga. You can also vary your sessions by focusing on specific themes, like breathwork, balance, or core strength.

6. Utilize Online Resources

With countless online classes, apps, and videos available, you can find inspiration no matter your level. Platforms like YouTube or dedicated yoga apps offer everything from guided sessions to tutorials on specific poses. Find instructors that resonate with you and explore their offerings.

7. Stay Accountable

Share your goals with friends or join a local yoga community. Whether it’s through social media or in-person classes, having others to practice with can boost your motivation and commitment. You might also consider partnering with a friend for accountability.

8. Listen to Your Body

Yoga is about tuning in to your body and respecting its limits. Pay attention to how you feel during and after each session. If something doesn’t feel right, modify your practice or take a break. Remember, progress comes from honoring your body’s needs, not pushing through discomfort.

9. Keep a Journal

Document your yoga journey by keeping a journal. Note down what you practiced, how you felt, and any insights you gained. Reflecting on your experiences can help you track your progress and stay motivated.

10. Be Kind to Yourself

Building a consistent practice takes time. There will be days when you feel less motivated or miss a session entirely—and that’s okay! Instead of dwelling on it, acknowledge your feelings and gently guide yourself back to your mat when you’re ready.

Creating a consistent yoga practice is a personal journey filled with ups and downs. By setting clear intentions, establishing a routine, and being compassionate with yourself, you can develop a fulfilling practice that nurtures both body and mind. Embrace the process, and enjoy the beautiful journey of self-discovery that yoga offers. Feeling a spark? Ready to take on the Spark Change Challenge? Sign up here!
