5 Tips for Creating a Home Yoga Space

Have you ever dreamed of cultivating a yoga oasis at home? While you may think that this is a luxury that only people with hundreds of extra square feet and waterfalls in their yards can enjoy, tons of real people actually create home yoga spaces. A good home yoga space is definitely all about creating a quality space instead of obsessing over the quantity of space. Don’t believe us? Check out these five tips for creating a perfect home yoga space.

1. Let a Feeling Inspire You to Create Your Space

Stop to think for a moment about how you want your yoga space to make you feel before even thinking about choosing a paint color or taking a hammer to a wall. Once you have the feeling or intention you want the space to inspire in you, you can then make renovations with it in mind. While some people want a yoga space that helps them feel calm and protected, others want a space that makes them feel energetic and motivated. A calming color scheme might include pale gray, pink, soft blue, lavender, and green. A high-energy color scheme can include pops of red, orange, yellow, and dark purple. You can even give your yoga space a name that reflects its intention.

2. Invite Nature Inside

It’s a big bonus if you can select a future yoga space in a part of your home that has large windows or glass doors that let in natural sunlight and green views. However, there are still ways to bring nature to the forefront without good views. The easiest way is to add some plants to the space. If you have the budget, installing LED light panels that mimic a blue sky can be another way to feel connected to nature while you’re doing yoga indoors.

3. Utilize Aromatherapy

Spending just a few dollars on an inexpensive diffuser that you can use to fill the air with the aromas of essential oils can be transformative. Candles and incense can definitely help to set the right tone in a yoga space. However, we recommend a plug-in diffuser with an automatic shutoff feature over those options in a home for safety reasons. We love and carry Simply Earth essential oils in our boutique. Our students especially love Defender and Good Vibes!

4. Place a “Do Not Disturb” Sign at the Entrance

You know exactly why this one makes the list! If you live in a home with a partner, children, or roommate, you already know that fitting in alone time can be impossible. Give yourself the gift of claiming some uninterrupted time by getting a sign for your yoga space that lets others know that you are strictly unavailable when the sign is up! Just having the peace of mind that everyone understands that this is your sanctuary time can help you to go deeper into your meditation because you aren’t constantly anticipating someone barging in with a question!

5. Add a Dresser or Closet

Half the struggle of getting in the mindset for meditation and yoga is getting your gear ready. If you end up heading to your bedroom to find your workout outfit, there’s a good chance you’re going to be distracted by a dozen other things you need to do along the way. Keeping a dedicated dresser or closet just for your yoga clothing makes the list for this very reason! Your yoga space should also have a shelf for your mat, blocks, straps, cushions, pillows, and any other accessories you use!
