5 hot yoga myths that keep people from ever trying it

No matter where you are in your yoga practice, you’ve probably wondered why hot yoga is so popular. Maybe you’ve even thought about signing up for a class, but all the myths make you pause.

The good news is that the hot yoga myths are just that – myths! Let’s take a closer look at what hot yoga is really like and why it’s more approachable than you think.

Hot yoga myths you may believe (but shouldn’t)

People talk about hot yoga a lot, but often what they are saying isn’t accurate. Here’s the truth about hot yoga.

Hot yoga myth #1: You have to be flexible to do hot yoga

You don’t have to know how to execute a perfect Camel Pose to find your place in a hot yoga class. Hot yoga doesn’t ask for perfection. All you need is a towel, a mat, and a desire to become more flexible. Over time, you might notice that a pose that was too hard is within reach.

Flexibility is a result, not a requirement.

Hot yoga myth #2: Hot yoga is dangerous

Yes, it’s warm. And yes, you’ll sweat. But that doesn’t automatically make it unsafe.

Our hot yoga teachers carefully consider pacing, modifications, and breaks in their classes. You can rest, drink some water, or take a step back when you need to.

The key to hot yoga is listening to what your body is saying.

Hot yoga myth #3: It’s only about weight loss.

Let’s be real. A lot of people think they’ll come out of a hot yoga class ten pounds lighter. While some people sweat off a little water weight, the real hot yoga benefits go so much deeper. You may find that your focus has improved or that you’re less stressed. You may feel more connected to your breath and body.

Physical changes are a side effect, not the goal.

Hot yoga myth #4: Everyone else will be better than you

It’s easy to imagine a room full of super bendy, ultra-serious yogis. The reality is that hot yoga classes are filled with regular people. You’ll find beginners and regulars all wobbling and sweating together.

There’s a spot for you here.

Hot yoga myth #5: You’ll feel miserable the entire time

When you first walk in, you may feel a little flutter of nerves. Once class gets started, many students feel calm. The heat and movement helps you focus. Your breath gives you something steady to return to when your mind wanders. You might feel tired, but you’ll often walk out of class feeling relaxed and accomplished.

So, should you try it?

If you’re curious about hot yoga, this is your cue to give it a try.

You don’t need to be a master yogi or a celebrity in peak shape to experience all the benefits of hot yoga. All you have to do is show up and get ready for a good sweat.

Your mat is waiting.
