Create your own home meditation space

If your house is anything like mine, it doesn’t always exude calm and quiet. Pets, kids, clutter–it can all pile up quickly, and a lived-in house, while full of love, can sometimes be chaotic. That’s why this blog post is all about creating an intentional meditation space in your home–somewhere dedicated to peace. Having a spot exclusively for meditation can help you stay consistent, keep you focused, and even inspire your meditation practice. Here’s how to design a peaceful sanctuary for inner stillness—no matter how big or small your home may be.

Choose the right location

A meditation space doesn’t need to be an entire room. A cozy corner of your bedroom, an extra nook in your living room, or even a spot on the front porch can serve as your palace of peace. The point in having this space is consistency. It’s dedication to it’s purpose will remind you daily to practice meditation. Try to find a spot where you won’t be easily disturbed.
Pro tip: Avoid places where your brain is stimulated like where you check email or do the dishes. Find somewhere that invites stillness, has natural light, and fresh air.

Clear it out

Sure, you can sage the space if you’d like, but we are talking clutter here. Your meditation space should be minimalistic and free of distractions like papers, magazines, or electronics. A clear space encourages a clear mind.
Pro tip: Clear the energy by burning some sage before and/or after your meditation practice. This will clear the space of any negative energy.

Make it your own

A meditation space should be clear of distractions, but you can add a few personal touches that are meaningful to you. Perhaps you might like to have a small table with the following items:
+ Candles or incense
+ Crystals or stones
+ Plants or flowers
+ A small altar or meaningful object (photos, statues, spiritual symbols)
+ A journal or book of inspirational quotes
These items will help ground your intention and make the space truly yours.

Make it sensational

Pay attention to the senses in your space. Soft, low lighting–maybe even a salt lamp will create an ambiance. Sound is also important for your meditation space in that you want it to be a quiet spot, free of distraction noises, but it might be nice to have a white noise machine or small fountain for auditory input. Finally, be mindful of your incense and intention. Some smells can excite your senses (citrine) while others are grounding (palo santo). Match your smell with your intention.

Create a ritual

Creating a sacred meditation space at home doesn’t require perfection—it requires presence. Whether you meditate for five minutes or fifty, having a dedicated space reminds you that your inner peace is worth prioritizing.
